How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Start with the first level and look for two free tiles that belong together. Select one tile, then its partner. A matching pair disappears, opening space around the remaining tiles. Continue until the whole board is empty. There is no opponent, countdown or need to react quickly. You can take as long as you like to compare symbols and plan a move. A highlighted border marks your selection; selecting it again clears it. Choosing a different free tile makes that tile your new selection if it does not match.

When is a tile free?

A tile needs two things before it can be removed: no remaining tile may cover any part of it, and at least one horizontal side must be open. The left side or the right side is enough; both do not need to be clear. Space above or below a tile does not count as an open side. Bright tiles with a small dot are playable, while blocked tiles have a muted surface. On layered layouts, inspect the upper tiles first. Removing an upper pair can uncover several possibilities below without clearing the entire row.

Symbols and matching pairs

Most tiles match only when both their family and their number agree. A circle marked 3 matches another circle marked 3, not bamboo marked 3 or a circle marked 4. The simple drawings are original symbols designed for small screens. Flowers and seasons are exceptions: any two flower tiles match, and any two season tiles match. A flower never matches a season. These groups appear later in the campaign. The symbols identify each family independently of color, and accessible tile labels include the family, number and whether the tile is free.

500 levels, with room to improve

The campaign contains 20 worlds of 25 levels. Early puzzles use approximately 24 to 40 tiles and open shapes that are comfortable on a phone. Later levels add more tiles, layers and dependencies, reaching 144 tiles in the final stretch. A new world changes the board’s accent and atmosphere. Completing a level unlocks the next one. Earn one star by finishing, two by avoiding shuffle, and three by also avoiding hints. Undo carries no star penalty. Replaying a completed level can improve its result; a lower score never replaces your best stars.

Touch, mouse and keyboard controls

On a phone, tap one free tile and then its partner. Drag across the board when part of a large layout lies beyond the visible area. The plus and minus buttons adjust the tile size, and two fingers can also zoom. Fit finds a comfortable view while preserving a minimum tile size; it may therefore leave a large expert board scrollable. With a mouse, click tiles and drag to explore. Keyboard users can reach free tiles with Tab and select them with Enter or Space. Escape clears a selection, and Ctrl or Command plus Z undoes a move while the game has focus.

Hints, undo and a fresh arrangement

A hint highlights an available pair, but it is not a promise that every later choice will be safe. Several identical tiles may be free at once, so the order of removal matters. Undo restores the most recently removed pair and can be repeated through your current move history. If no pair remains, a message pauses input and offers help. Shuffle keeps the remaining tile symbols but rebuilds their positions into a new, verified solvable arrangement. It resets undo history and limits that attempt to one star. Restart begins the same original level again without deleting campaign progress.

A puzzle for a quiet break

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile-removal puzzle, distinct from traditional multiplayer Mahjong with its own rounds, hands and scoring. This Alexo version focuses on finding available pairs and choosing what to uncover next. You do not need to know the multiplayer rules. Try removing pairs that release upper layers or open a long row, rather than automatically choosing the first pair you see. When four copies of a symbol are visible, compare the spaces each possible pair would open. There is no time bonus to chase, so a careful pause is always welcome.

Your progress and challenge previews

Completed levels, best stars, the current campaign level and sound preference are stored locally in this browser. They are not an online account or a cross-device backup. Clearing browser data may erase them, and an unfinished round restarts on your next visit. The two visible challenges let you try level 100 or level 400 immediately. They never award campaign stars or unlock regular levels. Return to the campaign whenever you want; its saved progress stays separate. Level 500 is reserved for the campaign. Daily puzzles are not included in this release.

Frequently asked questions

Is the game free, and do I need an account?

Yes. You can play in your browser without registration or installation. Ko-fi support is optional and does not unlock gameplay advantages.

What if there are no matching pairs?

Use undo to reconsider a recent choice, or shuffle to receive a solvable arrangement of the remaining tiles. Every original level also has a verified solution.

Can I play silently or in a different theme?

Yes. Sound is optional. Light, Dark and System use the shared Alexo appearance settings; System follows your device preference. Fullscreen depends on browser support.

Why can I not select a tile with the right symbol?

A matching symbol is only half the rule. The tile must also be uncovered and have an open left or right side. Remove obstructing tiles first.

Is there a time limit or a daily puzzle?

There is no time limit, and the game does not punish slow play. A daily mode is not yet part of this version; the 500-level campaign is available now.
